SMILE (Preston) is a registered charity as a self-help group for Chronic Pain Sufferers.

SMILE (Preston) was formed in June 2002 as a self-help group to support chronic pain sufferers and it is run by members for the members. Chronic Pain is debilitating and can be isolating and sufferers often feel ALONE. This can lead to anxiety, the loss of jobs, careers and independence, affect relationships and subsequently lead to depression.

SMILE provides a weekly meeting where you need not explain your particular challenges, problems or pain, as we are all faced with our own, and that brings common ground and understanding, where perhaps it is not found elsewhere. Through this understanding we provide one another with compassion and empathy and above all support. Sometimes just a look is all that is needed to know what sort of a week you are having. This leads to a relaxed, friendly and social group where SMILEs and laughs are the best medicine.

We meet every Wednesday morning from 9.30-12.00 at:
St Martin’s Church Hall, Off Broadway, Fulwood, Preston, PR2 9TH

At our meetings you can choose to take part in physiotherapy approved gentle exercises or pilates. We also have a relaxation and meditation session, and plenty of tea / coffee and sometimes biscuits and cakes. We also socialise at meetings and we arrange wonderful social events, which are partially funded by SMILE (Preston) Fundraising. Recent ones include, Christmas Party, Valentines Party and Pleasure Cruise on the Lancaster Canal. We also join SMILE Liverpool and Blackpool on their social events, and they join us on ours, which enables us to build strong links with the other groups and their members.

At some of our meetings we have special speakers who come in to discuss things which are relevant and interesting to our members. Members of the Preston Pain Management Team visit us to perform ‘Breathing Space’ refresher and trial courses on a regular basis, and the British Red Cross also visit us to perform massage for our members.

We have a wonderful Holistic Therapist, Gita, who has been visiting us for some years. She provides relaxing treatments to our members, which are paritally subsidised by SMILE (Preston).

There really is something for everyone at SMILE (Preston)
